Our Story

KARESA FLEARY

From New Eden is my way of contributing
to building healthier local communities
in Portland, Jamaica.

From New Eden is more than a newsletter. It’s a personal mission.

I’ve spent the first 16 years growing up in a rural community called New
Eden in Portland. I loved my community very much and still do.

New Eden struggles with many issues: no water, lack of job opportunities, poverty, access to healthcare, technology, good roads – you name it, and we’ve struggled with it. The all age school I went to has been downgraded to a Primary school because of the decline in student attendance. The Basic school, founded by my mother, has been closed, leaving no options for kids to attend- except in nearby communities.

The issues New Eden faced when I was growing up remain a problem today. Nothing has changed. And guess what – all these issues are invisible to everyone who does not live in New Eden. Even the elected officials who promised to create better communities.

What’s happening in New Eden is occurring throughout local communities everywhere in Portland, Jamaica. While I may not be able to fix these issues, I can make them more visible to a global audience – in hopes of rallying change.

What gets focus, gets attention, and what gets attention gets done.

When you think of the From New Eden newsletter, think of it as a community of people whose on a mission to advance solutions-based news that builds healthy communities and unlocks opportunities to elevate people from poverty.
